Intwandamela

Dimensions: 1,1 m X 76 cm
Reserve Price: R12 500

About the Artist: Willie Sonnenberg

After an illustrious career in advertising, including being inducted into the Creative Circle Hall of Fame; the body representing South African advertising creatives who have made a significant contribution to raising the standards of advertising, Willie decided to do other things that he is passionate about; one of which is painting. “I love the bush and all its inhabitants and that’s mainly what I paint. I use acrylics on canvas.

This painting is a tribute to a beautiful gentleman; Intwandamela, long may he roam as a free spirit.”

About the elephant in the painting:

The majestic Intwandamela is a long-term study animal that Elephants Alive first collared in 2004. His name means ‘he who greets you with fire in his eyes’ and it was given to him after Dr Michelle Henley first encountered him on foot with Eckson, an experienced tracker. Their mission was to take ID photos of the bull to add him to the ID database.

When they saw Intwandamela, he was peacefully ambling along until the wind shifted, alerting him of their presence. He mock charged, staring down Michelle and Eckson with his fiery gaze. Eckson bravely stood his ground, raising his arms and shouting 'Hey! Hey!'. Realising that they meant no harm, he relaxed and slowly moved off. Michelle and Eckson could breathe again and take in the incredible encounter and sure power they had just witnessed. He was therefore aptly named Intwandamela - ‘he who greets you with fire in his eyes’.

He has grown into a gentle giant with a wild spirit as he often breaks local man-made boundaries. The Grannies who form part of our Ndlopfu Gogo community program adore spending time with him on their field tracking days.
